## What hand block printing is
Hand block printing is an ancient Indian textile technique. A design is carved in reverse into a small wooden block (typically teak or sheesham, four inches square). The block is dipped in dye, then pressed by hand onto fabric, registered by eye against previous impressions. A complex multi-colour design uses a separate block per colour. The fabric is then washed, sun-dried, and finished. Each piece carries small variations in pigment depth and registration; these are the signature of human work, not flaws.
